The
provincial election is quickly approaching. To prepare for it, the
Voluntary Organizations Consortium of BC (VOCBC) and the Centre
for Non Profit Management invited voluntary organizations to a Roundtable
to discuss the role of the Voluntary Sector in BC and how we, as
a sector, wish to communicate our critical role in developing a
vibrant community.
About
40 participants attended this lively session and an action plan
is currently being developed based on the outcomes of the day.

Government and Community Voluntary Sector Relationships in British

On-Going
Initiatives:
National
Learning Initiative
VOCBC
is working closely with Langara College and the National Learning
Initiative on a pilot project to create a learning culture amongst
the professional leadership of voluntary sector organizations in
BC. The project focuses on two key findings of the Initiative:
* Professional
leaders in the sector have unique needs and styles of learning -
they learn best from mentors and from other leaders; and,
* The
core competencies of leaders include the skills required to deal
with ambiguity and complexity in the environments of their organizations.
Canadian
Federation of Voluntary Sector Networks
VOCBC
has played an important founding role in the development of the
Federation, and in April hosted a meeting of the Federation in Vancouver.
Members of the Federation are committed to strengthening
communication systems in the sector to ensure that information moves
more effectively back and forth from local to provincial and national
organizations.
For
more information on the goals of the CFVSN and for a list of members,
please see the Volunteer BC website at www.volunteerbc.bc.ca
.
Voluntary
Sector Forum
VOCBC
has enjoyed regular visits and reports from Shauna Sylvester, a
member of the Voluntary Sector Forum and Executive Director of IMPACS.
Shauna communicates issues identified at the national level,
and conveys BC concerns to the Forum.
Voluntary
Sector Portal
VOCBC is represented on the Reference Group for the Voluntary Sector
Portal Project. Funded through the Canadian Volunteerism
Initiative, the project partners are the Association of Community
Colleges of Canada and the CFVSN, and is being led by Niagara Community
College, Ontario. Carol Biely and Tim Beachy have attended
several meetings throughout the year on the development and design
of this important initiative.
Voluntary
Sector Human Resources Council
VOCBC,
together with United Way Canada, Centraide Canada and the Community
Foundations of Canada, is hosting a series of seven discussions
around the province on the feasibility of developing a Human Resources
Council for the Voluntary Sector.
