Voluntary Sector Resources
One of the key goals of Voluntary
Organizations Consortium of BC is assisting in building capacity
- sharing resources so that we are stronger together than individually.
Members of the consortium have
identified three areas in which to begin to share common resources.

The Voluntary Sector
Knowledge Network has a Leadership section that deals with a
variety of leadership and governance issues at www.vskn.ca/leader.htm.
On this site, you can join a discussion group on any topic or ask
a mentor a particular question.
goVolunteer.ca
has an extensive section in their Resource Library on Board Governance.
These are primarily books that members can borrow or non-members
can view on site from Volunteer Vancouver.
In addition, volunteer positions for board members and a training
program for board members are available through Volunteer Vancouver's
Board Match Greater Vancouver at www.boardmatch.org.

Organizational Liability
Voluntary sector organizations
from across the country are united in their concerns about the high
cost and difficulty in getting and keeping liability insurance.
Over 8% of voluntary sector organizations responding to a Voluntary
Sector Forum insurance survey in June 2004 reported insurance premium
increases over the past three years. The report findings provide
a good overview of the liability insurance issue. Find the

United Community Services Cooperative
has the most comprehensive study in BC of not-for-profits’
Directors and Officers Liability Insurance as part of Risk Management

Volunteer Screening, Matching & Recognition
Volunteer BC has a section on risk management, of which volunteer
screening principles are a key part of. Visit the risk

Volunteer Canada has also developed an extensive series of resources
on volunteer screening.
Under the Managing Volunteers section of the Voluntary Sector Knowledge
Network website, www.vskn.ca, there
are links to many screening topics including recruiting volunteers,
selecting volunteers, training volunteers, as well as volunteer
recognition. On this site you can join a discussion group or ask
a mentor on any topic.

Program Management) has an extensive list of books and periodicals
on screening topics such as evaluation, interviewing and placement,
orientation and training, planning, and recognition. Members can
borrow books / periodicals and non-members can view them on site.
getinvolved.ca enables non profits to post volunteer opportunities, sign up for positions, and network with other voluntary sector leaders.
