Volunteer BC wishes you a Happy National Volunteer Week 2010!
A NVW Message from President Kwan
National Volunteer Week is the biggest celebration of volunteerism in Canada. In BC, we have demonstrated in the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics that our volunteer core is strong and vibrant, with over 25,000 volunteers donating their time during the two weeks event. We hope that this momentum will continue into the future. However, we mustn't forget the many volunteers that work continuously in support of vital services in BC. In fact, the number of volunteering hours BC volunteers give every year is equivalent to hosting three Olympics in a year! For the many volunteers who give selflessly and continuously – thank you! Volunteer BC Collaborates with Getinvolved.ca
Volunteer BC has teamed up with www.getinvolved.ca to profile volunteers from across the province. Watch each week for a new star of volunteerism, and read their story. This week, read about Gary from the Canadian Red Cross, a Hero in Gumboots, and about Donna Dow at the Kidstart program.
A Post-Games Message from the President
"On behalf of Volunteer BC, it gives me great honour to congratulate the extraordinary efforts made by the 25,000 volunteers during the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. These volunteers exhibited the best traits of volunteer action: selflessness, dedication and spirit. They have proven to be an integral part of a very successful Games experience, and they have made our province proud. Volunteer BC promotes excellence in volunteerism, and the Games volunteers have embodied that excellence, serving as an inspiration for others. We at Volunteer BC look forward to seeing that same spirit and energy during the Para-Olympic Games taking place this month. The Games are a time to celebrate not only our athletes, but also all those who volunteer. We hope that the Games will inspire others to volunteer in the sports community, as well as in other sectors: culture, the arts, community development, environment, social development, or in other areas. We hope that Games volunteers will build on their experience and contributions, and continue to serve after the Games. We encourage everyone to seize the momentum of the Games, and connect with their local volunteer centre to find a volunteer opportunity. Our thanks to the volunteers from BC, from Canada, and beyond, who helped to make the Games possible, giving of their time, braving the weather, and doing such an excellent job presenting BC as the welcoming and friendly place we know it to be. We salute you!"
- Volunteer BC President, Kelina Kwan

Excellence
in Volunteerism to Build a Better British Columbia!
Volunteer BC is a provincial
association of volunteer centres, provincial voluntary organizations
and individuals working together to strengthen the growth and development
of voluntary action in British Columbia.
Currently, there are over
30 volunteer centres in British Columbia, with several others in
the development stage. These centres play a key role in promoting
and supporting effective volunteering in our communities. Volunteer
centres work with a broad range of organizations across the voluntary
sector including human and social services, health care, education,
arts, sports and recreation. They provide recruitment, referral
and support services to these organizations, disseminate information
on volunteer management and programming, provide training for volunteers
and managers of volunteers, and advocate on issues related to volunteerism
and volunteer programs.
