Volunteering in BC

The volunteer and community services sector contributes to local economies, encourages innovation and helps individuals achieve personal growth and career development. Volunteer and community service organizations provide a vast range of arts, cultural, educational, environmental, health, social, advocacy and recreational services.

BC Statistics from the National Survey on Giving, Volunteering & Participating (NSGVP)

The 2000 NSGVP (www.givingandvolunteering.ca) provided us with a changing picture of volunteering in Canada and in the province of British Columbia from the previous survey in 1997. Here are some downloadable fact sheets from the 2000 survey:

The 2000 NSGVP ( www.givingandvolunteering.ca ) provided these BC statistics on volunteering:

•  26% of British Columbians volunteered 142.6 million hours.

•  That is equal to 74,000 full-time jobs.

•  Approximately 845,000 British Columbians volunteered in 2000.

•  Therefore, the percentage of BC residents who contribute to volunteering in Canada would be approximately 13%.
